The Garden Route is the name given to the coastal strip between the Outeniqua  Mountains and the sea at the south end of South Africa.

Due to regular but moderate rainfall, the area is
green and a magnificent natural garden area with
deep river gorges, many lakes, and the best beaches anywhere.

Temperatures are mainly warm, 20 to 30°C -
seldom colder than 15°C even in Winter.
Nights at Ambleside in George are mild in Winter,
seldom colder than 8°C or too hot at night.

Clothing should be mostly light and casual.
No need for Arctic clothing here.

All Restaurants are smart-casual, no ties required.
Jerseys and rain-gear should be included.
Good strong footwear a must.

Currency is the SA Rand worth about (1st July 2007)
R7 for 1US $; R14 for 1 Sterling and R9.50 for 1 Euro.
Petrol is R7 a litre; car hire about US$ 50 per day,
or about Sterling 25 pounds
Beer and food are cheap (Don't even ask..)

Driving - We drive on the left, as in England.
Distances are in Kilometres.
Roads - are mostly tarred and in very good condition.
Where dirt or gravel is listed, roads are usually very good.

Doctors - South Africa has excellent medical facilities,
and modestly priced -
but take travel medical insurance if available.
The country is modern and well developed in this region
with all emergency services.

Language  - English is spoken everywhere, German is common at tourist venues on south coast.

What ever you choose to do, on your holiday to the Garden Route, it will be a rewarding and memorable experience, so make your plans and set the dates.
